Bird Turd

mashable.com/2010/02/22/bird-turd

A new iPhone App called Bird Turd makes it possible for you to poop on tweets that you don’t like. For $0.99 a turd you can show your disapproval of someone else’s tweet.

I think it’s a clever idea that might make twitter a bit more amusing, especially for the really boring tweets that you get sick of reading. Call me immature, but I think it’s a pretty funny idea. I may not be able to afford $0.99 to drop a turd on every tweet I don’t like, but I am sure there are many people who can.

This article is about social networking tips for journalists. It offers helpful tips and links for journalists trying to catch their breath in today’s real-time media atmosphere. Tips like, a guide on how to create and store data on social media accounts such as Facebook and Twitter, how to connect your news website to other sites, and how to stay ahead of the game when it comes to journalism.

I really enjoyed this page, I found a lot of the links very interesting. Here are a couple in particular:

Kids in Front of Screens

http://mashable.com/2010/01/20/youth-media-consumption/

This article is about the time kids spend in ‘front of a screen,’ in other words it’s about the amount of media kids are consuming today. Including time talking and texting on the phone kids spend upwards of 9 ½ hours consuming media each day. And with kids multi-tasking and using multiple forms of media at once the average is closer to 11 hours a day. This compared to 5 ½ hours five years ago.
This is an insane amount of media for a kid to be consuming. I wouldn’t be surprised if the number was even higher than 11 hours a day for a lot of kids. Whatever happened to riding a bike?

  1. The iphone app is a great idea, its unfortunate that they charge for that. I could see facebook coming out with something like that now too. As far as kids spending to much time in front of a screen, that is no surprise. It’s quit unfortunate but it also explains why we are the most obese country. You said it best what ever did happened to riding a bike?

  2. I really enjoyed the article about the guide for journalists. As a fellow journalist, I find the most important thing in our industry today is adjusting to the opportunities and flaws social media provides us with. I'm also planning on going for Editor and Chief next semester at the Royal Purple, and I liked the info the links provided me on how to make your news website social media friendly. That's one of the things we are trying to do at the Royal Purple.

  3. I think it is crazy too with all the time kids spend in front of screens. I see 7 year olds walking by texting. Back when I was that age, I don't even think I knew what a cell phone or texting was! Now you hear about all the teenagers who are racking up their cell phone bills for thousands of dollars because they are texting so much. I honestly am not sure how that is even possible!

  4. I think the twitter iphone app is funny too! It's about time someone thought of a way to disapprove comments, I just wish Facebook would come up with an idea like this one. I don't know how many times I wish I could just "dislike" a comment rather than only "liking" it. However, depending on the situation, pooping on a comment might hurt the poster's feelings a little too much.

  5. I think the twitter pops is very funny. If I had a bunch of friends on Twitter I think it would be pretty funny to pop on their tweets. I think Facebook should add this next to the like button. I think it would be very entertaining. I agree that kids spend way to much time in front of a tv or some sort of screen. They need to get out and be active. That's what I did as a kid and I think to much TV is bad.
