Comet Branding

Comet Branding Site

Tonight for class we heard from special guest speaker Sarah Meaney, a part owner a company called Comet Branding.

She spoke about writing for the web, specifically communicating through social media sites.

Her tips for writing on the web were to keep paragraphs short and use the inverted-pyramid style of writing. She explained how web writing is very different than writing a paper for example.

She explained how most people just skim over the words on the page, but there are some ways that you can improve the chances that people will read your post. By highlighting important words for example.

It's also important to keep in mind who you are writing for when you write on the web. Especially when writing for PR. For example should your message be formal or informal? What is the message the brand wants to portray? Is your message too long? These are good questions to ask yourself before posting.

It's a good thing to know your audience...who they are and how much they know about your product. This way you have a better idea of what information needs to be addressed.

Comet Branding helps a variety of companies communicate through social media sites. Here is a list of the companies Comet Branding works with.

  1. i found her presentation to be very helpful and interesting. I was saying before how its neat how a lot of this stuff seems almost "common sense" to our generation that we "know it all" but in reality we probably dont. so its really neat to kind of get an insiders view and all these really helpful tips because lets face it, everything will be all online within no time and the more we know the faster the better we will be preparing ourselves for the long run.

  2. I'm also a skimmer but didn't realize how many other people skim-read too. I just thought I did it because I'm young and lazy. Overall, I really enjoyed her presentation and will definitely be using her tips for future writing online.

  3. I can definitely see that people tend to skim through websites rather than read them. Most of the time people are just looking for certain information and they aren't looking to read through a bunch of paragraphs to find it.

  4. I never realized how much of a skimmer I really was until she started mentioning in her presentation and then showing some pictures of where people's eyes are more drawn to. That's really cool that that is what its like but personally I will go through up to at least 10 or 15 pages trying to find some information I'm looking for given the circumstances of what I'm looking for.

  5. It's interesting how something we do isn't an obvious concept. Everyone that has posted on here so far admits to being a skimmer, but how many of us even think about the way people read when we write? Sara's presentation was very useful and will be very handy in writing an effective blog.

  6. I like your use of short, concise paragraphs in this post. You really applied what she was talking about. I also like that you mentioned using hilighted keywords. It makes it easier for the reader to find what they are looking for, especially when scanning the page.
